Asahikawa Population vs Other Hokkaido Cities
Hokkaido is the largest prefecture in Japan, and Asahikawa lies close to the middle of Hokkaido, geographically. In Hokkaido, Asahikawa is the second most populated city, following Sapporo.
Sapporo’s population is around 1.97 million, and has been increasing year after year for the past few decades. While Sapporo is 38% of Hokkaido’s population, Asahikawa’s population accounts for only 6.3%.
For comparisons with other notable Hokkaido cities: The population of Hakodate is 237,790, the population for the Niseko region of 15,573, and Otaru’s population is 105,254.
Non-Japanese and Foreigners in Asahikawa
In a separate report, we provide details on the number of foreigners living in Asahikawa. Here, we will present a brief overview on the state of Asahikawa’s foreign population:
Currently, there are approximately 1,576 foreigners living in the city of Asahikawa. This number has more than doubled over the past decade, but the total percentage within the population is still far under 1%.
The largest non-native populations living in Asahikawa are Vietnamese, Chinese, and Korean.
Asahikawa Population Trends
Even as the second largest city in Hokkaido, Asahikawa still has a decreasing population, following Japan’s overall trend. After peaking at a population of 365,869 in 1986, that number was stable for around a decade, then started decreasing around the year 2000.
Asahikawa’s overall population has been decreasing, but the raw number of foreigner residents have been increasing in recent years, resulting in a higher percentage of foreigners in the city.
